Timing: when to leave the car
In the railway’s booking system for late October to early December 2026, 4-Hour Extended trains run 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 2-Hour trains run 3 to 5 p.m. The 2-hour ride runs on select dates only. Check your date on the train schedule page and in the railway’s booking calendar before you plan around it.
- Arrive 45 minutes before departure. That’s the advice in the railway’s FAQ, to allow time to park and pick up tickets. Its contact page says 30 to 45 minutes in one place and one hour in another, and that trains can’t be held for late arrivals. We’d treat 45 minutes as the minimum.
- Boarding opens 30 minutes before departure.
- Tickets are emailed. With a printed or mobile QR ticket you can skip the line and go straight to your platform (A, B, C or D, printed on the ticket), signed just off the sidewalk on the east side of the train. If you need them, pre-paid tickets can be picked up the morning of the ride at the Pre-Paid Ticket Window on the back side of the depot, facing the train.
- Ticket office: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern, seven days a week; (877) 413-8724.
Parking that fits your ride
Free on-street parking on East and West Main has a 3-hour limit from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A 4-hour ride plus the 45-minute early arrival comes to nearly 5 hours, so take a lot for the 10 a.m. train. A 3 p.m. 2-hour ride, parked at 2:15, fits inside the limit, which ends at 5 p.m.

Coaches and seats
Open-air coaches have outward-facing bench seats by open windows. Closed coaches are climate-controlled, with padded seats in groups of four. The adults-only (18 and up) Premier Car has air conditioning, reclining seats, unlimited non-alcoholic drinks, a catered snack with dessert, a group photo and a tote bag, and those amenities come only on 4-hour rides. The railway assigns cars, not seats, and all passengers switch sides of the train for the return ride, so whichever side you start on, you ride the other side home. In winter, open-air coaches get vinyl windows, and the railway still says to dress warm. Trains run rain or shine.
Food, drink and restrooms on board
You can bring snacks, non-alcoholic drinks and a small cooler that fits under the seat. The concession car sells drinks and snacks, including alcohol for guests 21 and older; outside alcohol isn’t allowed. It takes cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. The train has 12 bathrooms and two baby-changing stations (Cars 332 and 405). Smoking and vaping aren’t allowed on the train; in Blue Ridge, smokers are asked to use the blacktop about 40 feet from the train.
Accessibility
- Seats in the accessible open-air coach (#405, with stair and lift access and an accessible restroom) are not sold online and must be booked by phone at (877) 413-8724. Blue Ridge Railway
- The train's wheelchair lift handles chairs up to 1,000 lbs including the chair, and wheelchair access is at the corner of East Main Street in front of the depot. Blue Ridge Railway
- There are about five steps to climb aboard a coach. Blue Ridge Railway
- The railway has two wheelchairs for boarding and leaving the train only, and warns there is a lot of walking at the layover. Blue Ridge Railway
- Accessible (handicap) parking spaces with nearby wheelchair-accessible entrances are on the corner of East Main Street in front of the depot. Blue Ridge Railway
The short version: book the accessible open-air coach (#405) by phone, not online, and park at the East Main corner in front of the depot. Strollers are allowed but must be folded and stowed during the trip.
Pets
No pets are allowed on the train except service animals. Emotional support, comfort and companion animals aren’t allowed on railway property, and ADA service dogs must be leashed or harnessed, stay on the floor and be reported to the ticket office before departure. If your dog came along for the day, dog-friendly downtown covers the rest of town.

The railway says the Blue Ridge depot was built in 1905 and that the last regular passenger train left Blue Ridge in 1951. The Chamber dates the present depot to 1906, after the first one burned. The rail line from Marietta reached Blue Ridge in 1886. Rail bikes leave from the depot too; their dates and rules are on the schedule page.
